Some companies feel that if you don’t manage your money well then you probably don’t manage other parts of your life well.
Kind of BS but they are playing it safe (for their own BOO-TOCKS). It seems like from time to time a NEW management idea gets circulated. It is no skin off the hiring manager to hire another guy (with cleaner credit).
Believe me I’ve seen enough managers to know that they most likely don’t deserve their jobs. In the book Freakonomics, the author proves that management are often less honest (as compared to their employees).

Apparently as long as it doesn’t fall into few “bias” condition, they can do this.

It depends on what type of job you are applying for. Suppose you apply for a job a banking center they have to check your credit to see if you have any history of owing creditors because the bank is carefully searching for people who don’t have a history of stealing money or owing creditors. Whereas in some other jobs they dont have to check your credit.
i know how you feel! some companies feel that it would be a risk to hire an irresponsible person although they dont know your circumstances. most of the time, people with bad credit have lost their jobs or had some unforeseen occurence that made them go into debt. its sad but there are some jobs that dont check your consumer report. good luck with your job search!
They’re not concerned with helping you improve your credit score by giving you a job.
They look at your credit score because they believe it is a measure of your attention to detail, trustworthiness, integrity and maturity. I agree.
Also, despite what another answer says, it’s perfectly legal.
well… you see credit reflects your reliability…..i dont know why they didnt give you the job based on your credit (say what!!!…..sew them…..)
but depending on the job or such things….im not surprised….
….i know that credit report is not a common practice because … my cred isnt that good but still able to get a job….
..they dont care a about u….just themselves…so they can care less about your problems….( hate those business frieks)
You know, that’s an excellent question. A lot of places are starting to run credit checks on people applying to their company. I don’t really understand it so I can’t give you an answer but I certainly do feel the same way you feel.
Yes depending on the position you are taking they can check your credit report. It signifies your responsibility, what you can do is explain why your credit report looks like that example: college expenses, ex husband,…. Don’t go into great detail but if the only thing holding you back is your credit report, improve it!
i know this…if you have bad credit then you are a security risk for theft. i had to go through it too but i passed mine. bad credit means you aren’t responsible as well…to the employer.

Depends on the job, but basically all credit is is you “trustworthiness”. Typically people with poor credit haven’t paid bills on time, weren’t “keeping their word” when it came time for payment, or were over-extending themselves,”didn’t know their limit.” This is important because it, generally, speaks about the person and tells about them truthfully than an interview. If they don’t keep a promise to pay a bill on time, or don’t know their financial limit, can they fully be trusted in other matters?
Unfortunately, it works against you in both ways. Credit rating has absolutely nothing to do with income or employment. It only has to do with your credibility in relation to credit accounts, hence the term “credit rating”. It’s not uncommon, therefore, that many occupations which require handling of money consider a credit report a factor. Try going to any one of the many search engines, and find information on how you can get your credit in better shape, it can take time, but better credit is always favourable.
bad credit is indicative of a person that lacks discipline and responsibility. In extreme cases, financial problems follow the employee to work and creates problems.
That is truly sick and unfair. It’s best to stay away from stinking, rotten companies such as this, in my opiinion. I wish that you could sue them.
This is a privacy invasion of the worst order and I can’t think of anything more unfair. I disagree with anyone and everyone who even thinks it’s remotely “okay.”
I really have shunned the job world for most of my life, and I think it’s best to make every effort to be in your own business. In the job world, you’re virtually a slave to this form of unfair treatment and others, quite often. Or, try to find some more decent and fair employers.
While they may not legally be allowed to disqualify you from a job for a poor credit score, without a lawyer you can’t do much about it. As for what a poor credit score represents to an employer is that you have difficulty meeting your responsibilities. This could make you possibly be a risk to your employer with issues such as security. For example, you could sell company secrets to help pay your debut to a competitor.

I read an ad the other day that stated the applicant must have a FICO score above 680 to be considered! Ridiculous!
